As I walked the solemn, rain-ravaged beach, I remembered a different time when Waikiki was a mere swamp and King Kamehameha V kept trying to sell it to rich white men over poker games. He thought it would make a great vacation spot and visualised tourists flocking to it once he turned it into a beach. In 1864 heâd offered it to the Sinclair family for ten thousand dollars but they wanted the island of Niâihau instead. He took the cash and though the family still owned the island it was very dry, almost barren.
And Waikiki was an international destination spot.
The Sinclairs and all their heirs must still be kicking themselves.
Thunder kept booming, lightning flashed. The tallest palm trees bent against the wind.
I tried not to think about Jepoi. Even if there was no danger, how could we possibly be together? We could never live a normal life. I would only make him miserable. If I could lose this curse, ask forâ¦mortality? It wasnât the first time that a god had been granted that request after falling for a mortal, but then I wasnât just any deity, I was Kane. I had a greater responsibility than to service my own selfish needs. I was needed to restore balance to an ever demoralised universe.
âYou have to find your way back, Kane.â
I knew that voice. Before I looked upon him, I glanced up at the moon, praying for self-control.
âYou wish to rip out my heart? Too late, you already have.â
I sucked in some air, and let my gaze wash over him. He was standing on top of the water, not far from the shore, wearing nothing but a pair of white shorts. Curly brown hair to his shoulders, he was slight and muscular, his face like that of an angel with his large brown eyes. I said nothing, my mouth twisted.
âYou still canât say my name.â
âPerhaps itâs because it means nothing to me,â I told him, my voice flat.
âPerhaps,â he said softly. âI never stopped loving you.â
I pointed at him. âWhich is why you betrayed me, unbalanced the universe by sticking a knife in my back and relegating me toâ¦this!â I knew my eyes were glowing unholy red as I stared at him.
âWhat are you doing here, Kane? You cannot keep him safe by distancing yourself. Let me come home to you.â
âAnd start an unholy war with your master?â I sneered. âI think not.â
âI did not approve of him bringing the plague. I begged him to reconsider. He killed many only to get to Jepoi.â
I closed my eyes.
âListen to me, Kane, he is more in love with you than with me. It has always been this way, taking me from you was done in vengeance because you didnât want him. We should join forces, defeat him, topple him from his throne, and you and I could rule this world together.â
I shook my head. âYou are pathetic. Still, itâs about power. You donât want me. You want to take Kanaloaâs place.â
âThatâs not true.â He was standing in front of me now.
